Great starter but heavy June 28, 2010 brionamy 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought to replace ageing Ryobi 4-stroke that no longer starts. Chose touch start to give my back and shoulder a break. Initial impressions are good; it starts first time every time as long as you follow the correct procedure for hot start and cold start. You also need to pay attention to the fuel/oil mix. All through the instructions it refers to 50:1, but this only applies to synthetic oil - if you are using mineral oil then the ratio is 25:1. Main bad point is the weight. Pulls on your arm and the shoulder harness provided is not conducive to prolonged use. Furthermore, because the battery gets in the way, there is no single point of attachment as required for a full 4 point harness. The attachments are fore and aft, thus forcing you to use the shoulder strap. I solved this by fastening a webbing dog collar just behind the battery and clipping the harness into the lead ring. The Pro Cut head is excellent for grassy areas, but if cutting against a wall or fence then expect rapid wear. Don't bother buying the packs of 20 replacement lines at really silly prices - if you shop around you can get reels of 2.7mm or 2.65mm line at a fraction of the price and cut your own lengths.
Ryobi strimmer. April 30, 2010 Mr. R. J. Purchase 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I chose this strimmer because of its' electric start. This is most effective, and saves a lot tugging on a starter cord. The thicker cutting line and the high speed that it can rev. to, means that it can handle normal gardening work easily.
RYOBI RLT30SET TOUCH START April 21, 2010 A. J. WHITE 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
THIS ITEM WAS AT A REASONABLE PRICE FROM THIS VENDOR AS A SINGLE ITEM, BUT HOWEVER IF YOUR BUYING ADDITIONAL EXPANDIT ITEMS AS I DID YOU WOULD DO BETTER TO BUYING IT AS A KIT FROM RYOBI DIRECT AS THEY HAVE A STONKING OFFER ON AT THIS MOMENT.
IT IS A BIT EARLY TO SAY HOW RELIABLE THIS RYOBI ITEM IS BUT FROM MY EXPERIENCE TO GET ANY SPARES FOR THERE POWER TOOLS IS PROVING TO BE VERY TIME CONSUMING NOT EVEN SURE IF I WILL EVER SEE THE PART I HAVE ORDERED.
Sceptical but proven wrong January 24, 2010 Neil (Suffolk, UK) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I bought this item to complement other ground care equipment used to look after a very large garden. I was at first sceptical about the electric start and by poor reviews regarding starting but have been proven wrong.
As long as the instructions are adhered to I have found that the electric system will start the engine properly from cold or hot. The golden rule here is to leave the throttle alone for 10 seconds after the engine starts from cold and reduce the choke as soon as possible after the engine is idling. Leave the choke alone for warm starts and the engine starts with a single flick of the start button. Remember that this item needs servicing to keep it 'ticking over' so a new spark plug and spark arrestor should be on your yearly shopping list.
The quality of the item is good overall but I have some reservations about the handle as it is made of foam and it is already showing some signs of wear, this is a minor point and I will re-cover it if needed. The supplied manual is a bit 'brief' and I would reccomend that you read it and re-read it and then spend some time studying the stickers on the unit as they make more sense.
In terms of fuel economy this engine does better than some others I have used, you have to remember though that the mix of fuel to oil depends on the oil type so don't get confused (I believe that this applies to all 2 strokes). If it is quality synthetic oil then it states 50:1 and 25:1 if quality mineral oil is used so it is wise to stick to one type to avoid confusion. Also remeber to remove all traces of fuel in the winter as it becomes sticky and won't help starting the next season!
I have tried it with a hedge cutter attachment and it works well, the split shaft is easy to use.
Am pleased that there is a UK customer support line and a UK address for Ryobi. Overall I like the item, the larger 30cc engine is powerful and the electric start is convienient but remember it makes the whole unit slightly heavier than some other products.
