a fabulous book September 6, 2010 C. Schooley (Essex, England) I bought this book to take on holiday with me.I couldnt put it down.entertaining from cover to cover
The Midwife trilogy. August 22, 2010 fransfantasyfiction. This is a trilogy and I bought it because it seemed like good value. The historical detail is excellent and it does take you back to the west end and the times when having a baby waas fraught with dangers. I didn't catch much of a west end flavour, the characters could be from anywhere and I am sure I have met one or two of them recently! I also found the phonetical rendering of the accent a bit difficult.
The books are however a good read, with lots of human stories and the author doesn't talk down to her reader. I read the first book right through then went straight onto the second. By the time of the third, it was getting a bit 'samey' but I would still recommend this to those who enjoy some good stories, tales of the past, laced with some ralistic input.
Excellent August 2, 2010 SMKS (London UK) Bought as suggestion for our Book Group - very interesting first book in the trilogy, other two to go. Learnt a great deal about midwifery and the Eastend but very entertaining with the characters in it. Wish I had bought the books separately as rather a large book with all three together and heavy for the plane. Looking forward to reading the other two stories now.
The Midwife trilogy July 30, 2010 Peter The only fault I could find with this book was its weight! The content is superb and gives one a good insight into the East End of London before, during and after the war. Being a 'bloke' and old, the technical aspects of midwifery were somewhat of a mystery to me but it certainly did not spoil the book. I hope the tales were all true even though peoples' names were changed. What an interesting and satisfying life Jennifer Worth must have lived. I am certaily going to persuade my children and, maybe grandchildren to read it.
The Midwife Trilogy July 25, 2010 Hilary R The Midwife Trilogy is without doubt one of the best books I've ever read. I was sceptically when I first received it as a gift, especially being a latter-day midwife. I thought it might be a boring read but I couldn't have been more wrong, it was an instant page turner. A fascinating read of social history of the East End in the 1950's seen through the eyes of a student midwife and the perceptions of all the interesting people she meets in her practice. Full of larger than life characters. It has the ability to make you howl with laughter, weep and contemplate. Utterly brilliant.
